István Seres was an iconic personality of the Nyíregyháza Vasutas Sport Club.

Every sentence has to be written in the past tense. Unfortunately. Our former athlete, coach and colleague, István Seres, has passed away.

Frédi. That's how he was known to the Hungarian athletic community, including the strongest of them, the throwers. He was a massive, strong man, but also explosive and skilful. That is why he became a throwing athlete.

His favourite event was the hammer throw. He had good results, he was a 60m hammer thrower, but he could not be the best among the world-class Hungarian hammer throwers of the time.

He was an excellent team player. He and his teammates always travelled by train to the next competition. Frédi was one of the central figures of these unforgettable journeys.

As a coach, his main task was talent scouting. He had an excellent command of the children's language and for some reason, more people wanted to visit him than his colleagues. He always encouraged them, praised them, never criticised them, only corrected his pupils' mistakes. He cared for them with the love of a grandfather. Uncle Pista was a favourite of all of them.

The first entry about István Seres, as an employee of the NYVSC, is from 1981. It was not yesterday. He was the facility manager of the MÁV sports ground on Tiszavasvári road for nearly two decades. Many county soccer teams are grateful to him for allowing them to play their preseason games on the Railroad Field immediately after the snow melted.

His relationship with his colleagues and coaches was the same as with his students. He understood and empathised with our problems, even when we had given up on him.

Although he had long since retired, he was an almost daily participant in the training activities at his old workplace. He helped to select the weightlifters and the throwing athletes and set them on the road to making sport their way of life. He was delighted to find that the Athletics Centre provided a great environment for his beloved sport. He has even seen great competitions and championships there.

In spirit, he may have joined the pitching circle.

Uncle Pista! I miss you. Rest in peace!
