At the beginning of the year, there was hardly a weekend when the Nyíregyháza Athletics Center wasn’t bustling with activity. From January through mid-March, competitions followed one after another: national championships, international meets, and Slovak national events brought together the region’s best athletes.
Behind the numbers, however, lies not just statistics, but a vibrant, authentic sporting life.
Athletes from across Europe
In addition to Hungarian competitors, athletes from Croatia, Serbia, North Macedonia, Austria, Cyprus, Slovakia, Romania, and Slovenia also visited Nyíregyháza. Over the course of three months, 2,015 athletes passed through the center’s gates.
This meant not only competitions but also a sense of community: between January and March, 20 foreign teams arriving for training camps spent a total of 1,366 guest nights at the Nyíregyháza Athletics Center hotel.
Competitions one after another
The season gained momentum as early as January. The Nyíregyháza Open competitions, the Hungarian Race Walking Championships, and then the Slovak regional and national competitions kept the track constantly busy.
The highlights came in the second half of February:
where the country’s best athletes competed for championship titles.
Clubs, Medals, Community
Dozens of clubs were represented at the competitions. Nearly 40 clubs participated in the Hungarian championships, while up to 50 clubs competed in the international events.
Hundreds of medals were awarded in the various events, but gaining experience and improving skills were just as important—especially for the junior age groups.
Personal bests and memorable moments
The season was not without memorable performances. A total of 29 personal bests were set at the Hungarian Championships.
Among those who showed outstanding form were:
• Dominik Illovszky
• Patrik Simon Enyingi
• Dominik Pázmándi
who ran personal bests in the 60-meter dash—proving that the indoor season can also bring peak form.
Interest was high even off the track
The competitions weren’t just followed by many people on-site. The two days of the Nyíregyháza Open generated 17,400 online views, which clearly demonstrates the growing interest in the events. And in the stands, thousands of spectators turned out week after week, creating a continuous, genuine competitive atmosphere.
A Fun Fact
Looking solely at the international participants, it is estimated that the athletes and teams traveled more than 150,000–200,000 kilometers to reach Nyíregyháza—roughly equivalent to circling the Earth four to five times.
More Than Just a Competition Venue
The first months of the 2026 indoor season made it clear: the Nyíregyháza Athletics Center is no longer just a domestic competition venue. It has become a hub where the next generation meets the elite, the domestic and international fields, and competition meets experience. And this is perhaps the most important achievement of all.
