Budapest will host the first World Athletics Championships in September 2026, which will be the highlight of the season.
The news was announced by Sebastian Coe, President of the International Association (WA) in Budapest on Monday. The British sports chief said that almost 400 athletes from 70 countries, including some of the biggest stars, would compete in the event, which WA has set up to ensure that every year without a World Championships, the sport has a prestigious event that is watched around the world. Coe also told the State Secretary for Sport that Budapest was awarded the first so-called world final, among other reasons, because the Hungarian capital hosted the best ever outdoor world championships last year.
