Five athletes of the Nyíregyháza Sports Centre will compete at the World Championships to be held in Budapest between 19-27 August.
Qualification was a three-stage process. In the first round, the athletes could qualify for the World Championships by reaching the level time of the given event, in the second round they could qualify from the world ranking list, and beyond that the Hungarian federation could nominate 31 athletes who would otherwise reach the level of the world event with their performance. All in all, a Hungarian team of 63 athletes was formed, five of them from the Nyíregyházi Sportcentrum. We will be cheering on discus thrower Dóra Kerekes and four current Hungarian champions, three-time Olympian Máté Helebrandt - who will compete in the 20-kilometre walk - weightlifter Balázs Tóth, discus thrower Róbert Szikszai and sprinter Bencie Boros.
The athletes and their coaches were welcomed on Tuesday afternoon at the Town Hall by Mayor Dr. Ferenc Kovács.
- The number of the Hungarian team is a Hungarian record of sixty-three, and a Nyíregyháza record of five, as no other team from our city has ever competed at the same World Championships - the Mayor began the press conference. - I wish our athletes good health and the best possible performance!
- The Hungarian team is made up of athletes from twenty clubs, and we are the most competitive of the provincial teams, ahead of the major divisions - said László Vas, head of the athletics department of the Nyíregyháza Sports Centre. - Budapest Honvéd is represented by eight players, MTK by six, followed by us with five. I never dreamed of this. Our next goal is to qualify for the Olympics. I am sure that the Athletics Centre has contributed to this success. I must add that it is not only our athletes who train in Nyíregyháza, but also athletes from America, for example.
The participation of Máté Helebrandt was already assured, as he reached the level time, while Bence Boros, the 4x100, has been preparing for the relay for months. The sprinter was told by an official after his national championship title that he had made a big step towards an individual start, but since then he has not received any indication, so the news that he could run the 100 was unexpected on Tuesday. The qualification of Balázs Tóth, who was returning from the Universiade, was also made official at the last minute.
- I watched the team announcement broadcast this morning with great excitement. I watched it on the internet, Laci Vas on television, there was a slight time lag between the two, so before I saw it, he called me earlier, very happy that Balázs had also got the start - said Richárd Kőhalmi, the manager of Nyíregyháza Sportcentrum. - I am proud of the athletes and the coaching colleagues who prepared them day after day. Thanks are due to the city, the mayor and everyone who has contributed to the creation and maintenance of the Athletics Centre. Nyíregyháza can be proud that as a provincial association we have been ahead of the big athletics departments.
According to the competitors, one of them is aiming for an individual record, another would reach the final, and who knows, maybe we can even be happy about a Nyíregyháza medal. What is certain is that with the participation of our athletes, the biggest sporting event in the history of our country will be even more exciting for us.
