On Friday 30 August, the Nyíregyháza Athletics Centre will host a very special event. Former athletes of Nyíregyháza will gather again to reminisce and reminisce about the competitions of the past.
The idea for the meeting was born in 2020 in the minds of Blanka Kasza and László Losonczi, old athletics colleagues who graduated from the same year at the Nyíregyháza College of Physical Education and have kept in touch ever since. The date of the meeting had to be postponed several times, but it finally became definite this spring.
The former athletes keep in touch with each other through a closed forum, where they invited sports colleagues who played and coached in Nyíregyháza in the 1960s and 1970s. Among those invited are not only locals, but also a number of athletes from far away, some of whom are returning to Nyíregyháza for the first time in decades.
Blanka Kasza and Tamás Kiss are coming from the furthest away. Blanka lives a double life between Hungary and Sweden and has been an enthusiastic organiser of this event. Tamás Kiss has been living in Germany for 34 years and retired last year as head coach of the German national team's show jumping team. Katalin Velancsics, who has not been to Nyíregyháza since 1977, when she was a student at the university, will also be a special guest.
The event will be a great opportunity for former athletes to meet again, share their life stories and recall shared experiences. In addition to nostalgia and friendly chats, there will surely be plenty of talk about old training sessions, competitions and the passion for sport that still binds them together.
The list of participants is impressive:
From Nyíregyháza:
From other municipalities:
This meeting will be more than just a get-together; it will be a true celebration of commitment to sport and respect for a shared past. A place to rediscover the power of friendships and shared experiences, and a place to feel like young athletes again for a moment.
