The Nyíregyháza Athletics Centre project has won the Regional Sports Special Prize of the Urban Development Award jury in this year's competition for the capital districts and cities with county rights. Dr. Attila Ulrich received the award at a ceremony in the Hamvas Hall of the MagNet House in Budapest on Tuesday.
This was the third time this year that the Association for the Development of Settlements has presented the Urban Development Awards. The award was open to municipalities and municipal companies with a settlement development project completed in 2022. The aim could be community development, service or infrastructure development. Nyíregyháza applied with the Nyíregyháza Athletics Centre, built in February 2022 with a budget of HUF 7.5 billion. The multifunctional facility was built with government support under the Modern Cities programme.
"There is an NGO made up of professionals from different areas of construction. They presented this award yesterday in Budapest. 23 awards were given out, more than 100 projects were judged. The most important thing in judging the projects was their social benefit. In the field of sport, the benefit of the Athletics Centre is that it not only focuses on Nyíregyháza athletes, but also hosts competitions and training camps that are wider than Nyíregyháza or Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg county. It was also highlighted that we also organise sports competitions for seniors here. Hundreds of people who like sports and running can do it here in the afternoons. There is an outdoor track, which is not only for athletes," said Deputy Mayor Dr. Attila Ulrich, commenting on the award.
The sports centre covers almost 12,000 square metres and includes a 400-metre outdoor athletics track, a 48-seat sports hall and an indoor athletics hall. Built on the site of the old NYVSC track, the 600-seat hall of the centre, which also complies with international federation standards, offers athletes a six-lane running track with a track surface suitable for high jump, long jump, pole vault and weight throw. In addition to athletics, the Centre also hosts competitive fencing, badminton and judo. The hall's service facilities include changing rooms, gyms, gyms, a relay station and medical rooms. The outdoor, floodlit athletics track has a 570-seat grandstand, while the sports hotel offers double rooms, a restaurant and common areas for the comfort and preparation of athletes.
"I think it's becoming a more prestigious event. You can tell by the number of people attending. The awards were presented in the very impressive Hamvas Hall in the MagNet House on Andrassy Avenue. Minister Tibor Navracsics opened the event. What you heard and saw there made you realise that this is not just a given prize with no content, but that it is really taken seriously, that professionals look at everything. The implementation of the project from the very beginning and what happens to the project itself in the future," the deputy mayor said.
The Nyíregyháza Athletics Centre has been awarded the highest classification of the International Commission for Athletics. Pécs, Szombathely, Kecskemét, Csopak and Tata, as well as the districts of the capital, were among the winners. Green programmes, i.e. programmes in the fields of nature conservation, health or culture, were among the applications. The judges took into account their usability and popularity. In our case, they also took into account the fact that among the recreational sports, the Centre also hosts community running twice a week as part of its Move Nyíregyháza! We, the people of Nyíregyháza, can be proud of this multifunctional facility, which is truly an experience for all ages.
