The first day of the 49th Hungarian Indoor Athletics Championships brought great results and successes in Nyíregyháza, with long jumper Péter Bakosi and weightlifter Balázs Tóth defending their titles.
On Sunday, the men's pole vault had barely started when the women's triple jumpers, including defending champions Petra Nyisztor and Bettina Abiwu-Türk, were called up. Petra was looking forward to the competition in good form, having bettered her personal best of just under a month ago, so the experts expected her to be back on top. However, MTK's Bea Szabó had other ideas, as she improved her personal best with a jump of 13.02 in the first set. No one else managed to surpass this jump and she won the title. Petra Nyisztor had some encouraging attempts, but could only come close to her rival, but her second place was not in danger. The other athlete from Nyíregyháza Sportcentrum, Dr. Bettina Abiwu-Türk, finished in ninth place. Meanwhile, in the men's pole vault, only two other competitors were in the competition apart from Márton Böndör, the clear favourite (4.6 m). However, only Tamás Kéri managed to clear 4.8 metres, and Böndör did not stop until 512 centimetres to take the title. In the 60 hurdles, it was interesting to note that only the podium finishers in the men's field finished better than the winner and runner-up of the women's race.
A large field gathered in the 200m, with eighteen women and fourteen men competing for the title. The gold medal was decided by just one hundredth of a second, with Alexa Sulyán, who finished third in second place, breaking the U20 national record. Tamás Máté won the men's race with a new national record. Gabriella K. Szabó of the Nyíregyháza Sportcentrum withdrew from the women's 800 final, but she was entered in the 3000m final and finished fourth, her personal best. The day and the competition ended with the 4x400 relay, with the MATE-GEAC women's quartet setting a new national record, while the FTC won the men's title.
