Luca Kozák is preparing in Nyíregyháza. On 9 January, the European Championship medallist was elected Female Athlete of the Year. The hurdler is currently training at the Athletics Centre.
Slovak and Hungarian national team athletes are training at the Atlétikai Centrum. During the indoor season, the Nyíregyháza facility is an ideal venue for them. Among the athletes is Luca Kozák. In 2022, the hurdler broke the Hungarian record in the semi-finals of the European Championships, and then finished second in the final. Earlier this week, she was named 2022 Female Athlete of the Year.
- Just to be in the top three was a great honour. I really started to get my hopes up when I saw that Balázs Baji would be the winner in our category. It was a huge honour. A female athlete has not received this award since 1979, which is also a recognition of our sport now, and I would like to prove that I did not receive this award by chance," said Luca Kozák.
The hurdler is now in Nyíregyháza preparing for the big races of the next season. He wants to do well at the World Championships in his home country and then at the 2024 Olympics in Paris. At the Athletics Centre, he has all the conditions for training.
- I am from Debrecen, so Nyíregyháza is ideal for me because of the distance. I was here last year during my preparations and it's good to come here again. Partly because of the change of environment, but here everything is given to get the job done," the athlete added.
Luca Kozák is not the only star athlete training in Nyíregyháza. Olympic and world championship medallist weightlifter Anita Márton has already had a training camp in December in the Sabolcs county seat and will return to the Athletics Centre next week. The Sports Centre will host a competition at the end of next week and the Hungarian indoor championships will be held here in February. A year ago, the local athletes won several gold medals.
