The men's and women's 4x400 relay teams both set indoor Hungarian records in Nyíregyháza, while several of our athletes achieved great results and scored valuable points in Bronze category events on Saturday 28 January 2023.
On Saturday, the 4x400m relay team took the lead in the open indoor event at the Nyíregyháza Athletics Centre, closing the programme with both the men and women beating the Hungarian national record.
The girls' team of Evelin Nádházy, Fanni Rapai, Sára Mátó, Janka Molnár competed and won with a time of 3:37.11 minutes. With this performance, the record of 3:38:30 set in Ostrava in 2019 was consigned to the past. Interestingly, the youngest members of the new record-breaking team, Janka Molnár and Evelin Nádházy, were in the former record-breaking foursome alongside Míra Kőszegi and Virág Simon.
The men's team of Tamás Máté, Dániel Huller, Zoltán Wahl and Attila Molnár then attempted to break the 23-year-old Hungarian record, which is much older than the women's - successfully! The relay team ran unopposed, but that didn't stop them from completing the distance in 3:08.58, eclipsing the 3:09.35 run by Péter Nyilasi, Attila Kilvinger, Zétény Dombi and Tibor Bédi in Ghent in 2000. So the national records were not only renewed, they were also set on home soil.
Meanwhile, several of our athletes have competed in prestigious foreign events in the World Tour Bronze Indoor Track World Series. Gréta Kerekes finished second in the 60m hurdles in Nantes, France, with her best start of the season in 8.10 seconds, and Anna Tóth, who finished third in Lyon in her first career international indoor event, also competed in the 60m hurdles, with a personal best of 8.19 seconds.
In Kladno, Czech Republic, Peter Bakosi finished the high jump with 222 centimetres, the same as a few days ago in Brno, and again finished third. And it was here that Anita Márton achieved 18.22 metres in the weight throw, which also put her in third place.
"Apart from the valuable points our athletes collected in the competitions, their results are also encouraging", says Géza Scheidler, Director of Sports Administration of the Hungarian Athletics Federation. - We were very pleased with the relay team's best times, but these records are not a surprise, as they have been preparing for the programme and their work is now starting to pay off. However, it is not possible to qualify for the European Indoor Championships in Istanbul with a relay team, but only on the basis of individual results. That said, both relays have a lot of potential and we haven't seen them at their best yet."
